Greetings from the Clay County Veterans Service Officer:
The main topic for this month is: Minnesota Veteran Assistance:
There are two major assistance providers for Minnesota Veterans in Need; the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs’ State Soldier Assistance Program (SSAP) and the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans (MACV). Both programs have proven to be a tremendous help to Veterans, their spouses,
dependents, widows, and widowers!
Below is a simple summary of each:
SSAP. The income and asset limits are at poverty level, however, you won’t know
if you are eligible unless you call and find out! Look at the benefits:
a. Optical Grant. They have a $400 Optical Grant which can be used for
optical needs; including eye exam, prescription glasses, contacts, and/or
prescription sunglasses. This can be reapplied for annually.
b. Dental Grant. There is a $1,000 Dental Grant that can be used for routine dental care; including exam, Xrays, simple extractions, fillings, etc.. This, too, can be reapplied for annually.
There are two (2) additional Dental Grants that are issued once-in-a-lifetime:
I. $2,000 grant for Extractions to Prepare f
II. $3,000 grant for new Denture(s) or Partial(s).
c. Special Needs Grant. This is a once-in-a-lifetime grant. It is available for veterans who are falling behind and need a little help to sustain. They will consider assisting with; medical bills, prevention of disconnection for utilities, insurance payments, small car repairs/tires, etc..
MACV. There is no income and asset limits for this program, they do however take
into consideration what your debt to income ratio is. Their goal is to help with a
payment to improve a temporary situation to enable the Veteran to sustain on their
own. MACV is a non-profit organization that just assists veterans in need with
partial or whole payments of necessities; rent, mortgage, utilities. They will assist
if it will better a situation and not just postpone a problem.
Simple rule of thumb, if a veteran or immediate family member is in need, please
call the Clay County Veterans Service Office to see if we can help!
Again, if we can help you in any way, please do not hesitate to call us at 218-299-
5041. If you know that your specific need is going to be MACV or SSAP, then
please ask for JoDee when you call our office.
Thank you.
